Manage Tax Exemptions

If you have set up taxes, some of your members may be exempt from these taxes. A member can be exempted from tax on their membership automatically if the Do not tax field is enabled on their account. 

Steps to Enable the "Do Not Tax" field

Step 1: Customize Member Admin Template 

Go to MembershipWorks > Customization > Member Admin.



Step 2: Add Field 

Click on + Add Field on the right.



Step 3: Add Do Not Tax Field 

Next to Field, select Do not tax from the drop down and click OK.


Step 4: Save Template 

Click the Save Template button on the left.


Steps to Mark a Member as Tax-exempt

Step 1: Open Members Account

Go to MembershipWorks > All Accounts and click on the member’s account.

Step 2: Edit Profile  

Click the Profile link at the top of the member’s account.



Step 3: Enable Do Not Tax Field 

Check the box next to Do not tax in the member’s profile and click Save.

The Do not tax exemption will apply to all tax rules, including global tax rules.

Tax Exemption for Other Payments

For event registrations and payments made through our Forms/Carts/Donations feature, a registrant is exempted from tax if the registrant has an account and the Do not tax field is enabled on their account.

If you have added the Do not tax field on the event registration or form template, then whether the registrant enables the field on that form will take precedence (ie. the Do not tax status on the account is ignored).
